A group of British scientists is calling for an end to the practice of sex tourism, saying it can be dangerous.
In response to questions about the dangers of this kind of behaviour in the UK, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) says it is to be welcomed.
Dr Laura Heslovitch, the NICE head of sexual health, said: “Sexual health is a fundamental part of society. There are more and more new sexual problems. And we need to find ways to get more people into this kind of activity.”
The NHS has a sexual health and wellbeing centre in Thailand and a number of specialist clinics in Thailand.
“This is a significant milestone in our work,” said NICE chief executive Professor Andrew Cooper.
“It’s a milestone for all of us. And it’s an important step forward.
“Our research is designed to look at the way sex tourism is managed. We’re trying to find out where we can get people to engage in it.”
Dr Cooper added: “There are a lot of reasons why we see a need for more of these kinds of practices. And that’s what we think it will take to bring this into the wider community of people with sexual problems.”
There has been growing concern about the dangers of sex tourism, with a new study indicating there was a “great risk” of heart disease.
Professor Cooper said: “The dangers of sex tourism are very worrying, and it’s a very serious issue.”
She said: “We have to get people to think clearly. And if people are being asked to engage in sex, they’re being asked to be careful. It’s a very dangerous practice.
“It’s not about the sex itself. It’s about what the people are being asked to do, which could be risky to them.”
The NICE chief, Dr David Healy, said: “Sex tourism has no place in the NHS. It’s a taboo topic, so people shouldn’t be allowed to have sex in a way that they can’t, or aren’t comfortable with. It’s a serious issue.”
He added: “It’s a taboo topic that’s very upsetting to many people. It’s not what sex tourism is. But it’s something we should be talking about.”
The UK government has also been trying to make sex tourism a part of its sex industry.
It has been working with companies to produce “sexology” and the products “sexology” are being made in Thailand.
The NICE chief said the government is also trying to make sex tourism safe by talking up the dangers of it.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is currently advising the public to stop using the word sex to describe their sexual behaviour.
The NICE chief said: “The word sex was coined by the founder of the company Viagra, who was a sexual health specialist in Thailand.
“The word sex was not coined for the purpose of describing the way men experience sex. It was not coined for the purpose of describing the way they do it.
“Sex is not a thing for men and women. It’s for men and women, not just to engage in sexual activity. It’s not something they can say, ‘What do you want to do in bed?’ It’s something that they can say to themselves.”
The NICE chief said: “We know sex is not a thing for men and women. It’s not something they can say, ‘What do you want to do in bed?’ It’s something they can say to themselves.“It is not something that men can say, ‘What do you want to do in bed?’ It’s something they can say to themselves.
